Wolf Slave 27 – Alex Ankarr

Damn all wolves, Penn thinks viciously. Damn most especially their heightened senses: and this is half the trouble of being a slave to wolf-kin. You just can’t get away with anything. So he makes his mind up to it, makes a clean breast of it. It’s embarrassing, though: he’s not just dropping his eyes out of guileful submission. ‘It was Greta,’ he admits, and does his best not to sound sulky or furtive, for it’ll help his case not at all. ‘The maid with-’

But he’s cut off mid sentence: Ree is suddenly quite calm, and steps away from him. ‘I know the one. Handly little slut: has her dugs stuck out at every and any likely fellow that comes her way. You needn’t think yourself especially flattered, there, Penn, especially since it’s likely only that since you’re recently favoured and-’ But he stops abruptly himself: for, after all, to go on would mean, Penn thinks shrewdly, to admit that he’s been favouring Penn beyond the common way. And that would skew their relationship, perhaps, beyond the regular master and servant one, in ways that could be confusing to both of them.

As if he weren’t confused enough, himself, already. But after a momentary pause, Ree continues. ‘In any case, make the most of her… abilities while you can. I’m having her moved to the Carson pack very shortly.’

And he turns to go: and Penn stills absolutely in shock. Because he’s heard nothing of this, prior to this moment. Not from Greta, and not from any other member of the household, slave or master. And what’s more, he has a feeling there’s a reason for that.

No slave likes to be moved from household to household, and for good reasons: he has a feeling he’s responsible for this, and will be answerable to Greta for it. It’s a very uneasy feeling, a guilty shock in itself: and perhaps partly responsible for him forgetting himself and his place so utterly. Utterly enough, that he’s done it before he even knows it: reached out and caught a hold of Ree’s arm, as he turns to move away.
