A Perfect Bloom 10 – Alex Ankarr
He’s looking for the head gardener, scouting around as he walks, to maybe ask him about who put that rose on his desk, who absconded with it in the first place. (Who stole a rose from his green-houses? Who would steal a rose? Surely not a… rehabilitating ex-convict, in a company sponsored program. No, surely not. Linnet doesn’t know everything, not yet.)
Yes, Cory is keeping an eye out for the head gardener, Siles. That’s his cover story, the one he’d tell anyone asking. The one he’s telling himself, too.
But there are only a couple of overalled subordinates in the huge and cavernous, light-filled and yet green-shaded hothouse. Both of them greet him respectfully, with shy nods of the head that make his heart sink a bit. He’s the big cheese here, the CEO, it’s true. Deference is what he gets from company employees – barring Linnet – but he doesn’t care for it. He’d prefer a bit more of a relaxed interaction with employees, but sometimes it’s difficult.
Also it makes him think about how difficult it would be to date an employee, because that kind of an attitude would make any kind of free, comfortable interactions problematic, right? Even a first approach would be difficult, and probably very very awkward.
Not that there’s any particular reason he’s thinking about that. No, no, there’s no reason.
It’s not as if he’s even thinking about that at all. No, he’s thinking about the rose, that beautiful red-gold hybrid, and that’s because he’s tracked it down and come to a twitching halt in front of the bed that houses six beautiful bushes of it, red and gold fire running riotous all over the carefully monitored beds. All six bushes are in glorious, heavy-headed nodding bloom. You’d never know one of the blooms had been stolen away, each bush is lush with buds and flowers.
It’s shocking that anyone dared to nick one of them. It would – even for a CEO – be reprehensible, really, for someone to steal away a second.
But on the other hand, Cory is the CEO. If anyone’s perfectly entitled to deprive one of these perfect flaming bushes of a bud, then it’s him. Every one of them is his property, when it comes down to it.
