A Perfect Bloom 14 – Alex Ankarr
Well, it shouldn’t be, at any rate. “What on earth did you think you were doing with that rose? Sir,” Sam asks, severely, as he fools with tape and safety pins. “The thorns on that breed are quite lethal. Mr Siles reckons they tried to breed ’em out, but the flowers weren’t as beautiful. Can’t get the rose without the thorns.” He’s humming softly to himself, in between chatting and concentrating on the bandaging. He really is lethally attractive.
Cory is getting a little bit of a warm glow, here. And he’s suddenly feeling a lot more relaxed. Cheeky, even. “I was stealing the rose,” he explains. “You should know. You caught me.” He’s smiling now, which is good, because Cory has reliably been informed that he has a very nice smile, twinkly and warm and liable to lure people into unguarded confidences and flirtation.
Sam gives a little gasp, a laugh, although he doesn’t look up from his work to catch Cory’s eye. His hands do slow a little, perhaps, as they handle Cory’s own, warm and firm and big, meaty. “I don’t think you can really call it stealing. Not when you’re the chief executive of the company,” he adds, parroting back Cory’s own unfortunate words, but with a much lighter, slyer touch to them.
“Oh?” Cory asks, light-headed at this point. “Because I had a feeling, back there, that you were about to clap me in leg-irons and put me in the dungeons for misappropriation of Rocque company property. Isn’t that right? Isn’t that what you were going to do, before I had a near fatal accident with a rosebush thorn?” He uses his eyelashes to their greatest effect as he finishes, angling for eye-contact that Sam is withholding from him, right now.
Sam’s lips are twitching, though, and probably against his will and against all better judgement. Then he opens his mouth, and perhaps decides not to say what he was going to say. Then says it anyway. “Only if you’d like me to,” he says, and Cory feels his face widen with pop-eyed delight.
Fuck. He is being flirted with, here. It gives him ideas. It makes him really want to know certain things. “Anyway,” he says, “I had a reason for rose-stealing. It was completely justified. In the spirit of investigation, I was looking into the mysterious disappearance of an exactly similar bloom, only yesterday. So I needed a sample to enable me to better conduct my investigations.”
