A Perfect Bloom 35 – Alex Ankarr

“Yes. I’d noticed,” Cory says drily. “Your point being?” He’s not quite happy holding the rose. It’s a poignant moment, and it makes him think of things he’d like that he’s not liable to get.

“Well,” she says, giving him a prod in the ribs, “maybe it’s your turn, Cory. Huh? Has that ever occurred to you?”

He turns the idea over slowly in his mind, and she sighs, gets up close and puts an arm around him, a head on his shoulder. “He’s given you flowers, honey… candy… poems… music… Eventually, if a guy doesn’t get any encouragement, he kind of gets the idea that his attentions aren’t welcome. Maybe he’s given up. Maybe he figures you don’t like him. Don’t you like him, Cory?”

She squints a look up at him, where her head lolls on his shoulder. “Don’t you?”

It’s hard to answer. Or at least, it’s hard to answer honestly. So he tries an honest question, instead. “Do you think he really likes me, Lin?” Because any amount of assurance and reassurance on that subject, doesn’t seem to be quite enough.

And maybe the point of that goes home, to Linnet. Because her answer is, “I honestly do, hon.” And she cradles his waist a little, rocks him around circular, jiggles him. “And what I think you maybe mean, because it’s always more mysterious, is why does he like you. That’s a question that really only he can answer. But I can hazard a few guesses. I could say that attraction is a mystery. I could say that he’s clearly had problems with asshole authority figures in the past. I could suggest that maybe a technical authority figure who is nice and kind and gentle and a sweetie, generally, would have an attraction for someone looking to resolve those issues, with someone who’s a positive influence, and has a good heart. Maybe also he’s looking for someone to take care of – his natural inclination – but he needs to resolve those issues at the same time. Preferably with someone who’s five foot eight tops, with cutie blue eyes and the sweetest smile on the planet. Or,” she muses, “I could say that all of that is very probably no more than so much bullshit, and it’s all about the eyes. And the smile. And the cutieness,” she says, pinching Cory’s cheek. “And the ass,” she adds, pinching that also, because hell, this is Linnet, and she always has to go at least one step too far.

“Feel better now?” she asks.
