Cupcake Kissin’ 9 – Alex Ankarr

But Mayhewlinson evidently notices his crestfallen state, and is straight in there to reassure him. ‘Let me underline that you have inherited this property, Mr Rockalde, it is yours outright, and the monetary benefits that accrue from it are yours to do with as you wish.’ He gives an emphatic nod, and Caspar is a little bit soothed. But then the old geezer goes on to add, ‘But in order to do so, there are a number of things you are required to do – otherwise those benefits, which you can expect to be substantial, quite substantial, will be withheld from you and kept in a retainer account. Said account, you will only be able to access at such time as you become willing to fulfill Mrs Honey’s prior conditions.’

Caspar digests this for a moment. Then, ‘The old bat,’ he says, but reasonably cheerfully. He might have known it wouldn’t be all plain sailing. But on the other hand, his old auntie loved him during her long and batty life. Any conditions she would set upon a bequest to him might be unhinged, unreasonable and unnecessary, but what they aren’t going to be is vindictive. Anything Gertie wanted him to do she simply, genuinely, wanted him to do. It isn’t a nasty little ploy to diddle him out of something that has fallen into his lap gratis and gift-wrapped. And whatever it is, it’s something she considered him capable of, something not too disagreeable, that will result in him landing up very comfortably off, thank you.

‘Let me have it,’ he says to Mayhewlinson, resigned at this point. ‘Both barrels.’

For that, he receives a pleasant, understanding smile. It’s possibly also slightly pitying. ‘In order to benefit from your bequest, Mr Rockalde, you must run your aunt’s former establishment, the Honey Gummy Gertrude Bakery, for a period of two full calendar years, in all capacities including on-site management, bakery service staff and cleaning, along with other rota’d staff. You must adhere in all respects to the habits and customs of the business that were in place when your aunt died, including opening hours, menu, recipes, preparation, uniform and décor. Oh, and your aunt insisted on you keeping the name of the place, also. I believe, Mr Rockalde,’ Mayhewlinson adds, raising his face to view Caspar’s shocked one, ‘that it’s a cupcake bakery.’
