Cupcake Kissin’ 53 – Alex Ankarr

He doesn’t sound at all doubtful about the outcome, about Caspar’s response. Why should he? He’s probably had what he considers enough encouragement from Caspar, these last weeks and months. Caspar hasn’t exactly been fighting him off, not nearly as much as he should have been. And now he’s a single man, he’s probably thinking, yeah, Caspar will jump at it.

Except, no, no, Caspar thinks, firmly, quite firmly. Caspar won’t, not lickety-split like that. Not for the price of a couple of soft toys. He’s quite nice, friendly in response, though. ‘Sorry, I have work to do. I guess I might see you at your place tomorrow. The decorators are going to be round doing the drapes and flowers. Or at the bakery, if you come for your cake yourself. Thanks for the new pets, though! I will name the big cat after you. There’s something about the eyes, and the toothless bite, it just reminds me…’

And with that bit of cheek he’s done. He doesn’t give in, and that’s despite a whole lot of chat and wheedling on Mack’s part, that gets progressively less cocky, but no less persuasive and insistent. When he clicks the call off, his evening is still free.

Mack is going to have to try a little harder than that. Caspar isn’t to be won by a couple of furry stuffed animals. ‘Am I, boo?’ he asks, pulling the wolf up to his face and gurning at it cheerfully. ‘No, Mack, I am not!’

This is, of course, the point at which Sandy walks into the back room, clocks him standing talking earnestly to a stuffed animal, and walks immediately back out again. She’s shaking her head and muttering to herself, and possibly laughing too. Caspar considers it very shocking and disrespectful, to her employer. ‘Terrible,’ he says to furry!Mack. ‘Absolutely terrible. Chew the stuffing out of her for me, furry Mack.’
