What I’ve been reading – Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery

Anne of Green Gables (Anne of Green Gables, #1)Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I’m giving this five stars but that might be partly out of sentimentality. Reading as an adult, a lot of the things Anne has to say strike me as saccharine, verging on treacly. But it had such a hold on me as a kid that I’m powerless to mark it down.

    1. I read an essay on Anne’s development through the series recently, it made the point of how comfortably conservative and smug she eventually became, from such a firebrand beginning. Sadly I had to agree, although I’d never thought much about it before. But the early books are lovely, if one ignores the politically oblivious social stratification and saccharine moments. A truly politically engaged Anne would have been an interesting literary experience.
